Passionate about patient-centred care, Katie loves to be able to provide the highest quality care with a personal touch, which led to her developing her own private practice. She started working in The Surgery at 77, taking the opportunity to work alongside her brother, Dr Patrick Magowan, in the practice lovingly built by her parents Drs Mary and Terence Magowan. She was the last of the family to be working in the building, the end of an era, but still enjoys hearing some lovely stories of days gone by from patients.
In April 2024 she moved her practice to Broughshane, the village where she was born and raised. Being able to serve her own community is a dream come true, and what better surroundings to be in than the beautiful Raceview Mill? In a site soaked in local history, flanked by thriving small businesses and just a short stroll from the stunning Braid river, Katie is truly in her element. Having worked hard to make her clinic space reflect her peace and happiness in her surroundings she is glad to be able to provide care in such a special spot.
Katie is registered with the HCPC (Heath and Care Professions Council) and is a member of the Royal College of Podiatry.

CLINIC
Catherine Burnside Podiatry is located in the beautiful garden village of Broughshane, the Gateway to the Glens. The clinic is a space which combines the modern healthcare environment you expect, with a calm relaxed ambiance, tying in with the unique heritage of the building. It lies within Raceview Mill, a historic woollen mill which has been sympathetically converted into a bustling hub housing specialist local businesses including healthcare, beauty and lifestyle, local arts and crafts, a fabulous eco friendly refill shop, some outstanding food businesses and even a luxury wedding venue! After you skip out on fresh feet you may even wish to take advantage of the beautiful walk down to the Braid River and visit the Wildfowl Park and the Buttermilk Bridge!
Just a few minutes from Ballymena, and with exceptional access to the motorway network, Raceview Mill has parking in abundance, and the clinic is only steps away from the nearest disabled parking space. With no steps the clinic has relatively good disabled access but please be aware that because it is an old building the doorway is rather narrow (70cm) so if you are a wheelchair user please check first that your wheelchair will fit.
A customer waiting area is available (shared with several other businesses in the building) and there are toilets on site.

SERVICES
All treatment is carried out by a highly trained professional Podiatrist, registered with the HCPC and a member of the College of Podiatry, and with many years of experience working within the NHS.
INITIAL ASSESSMENT £40
Medical history - many medical conditions and medications can affect your feet and gathering a thorough medical history allows us to develop a safe and appropriate tailored treatment plan.
Basic neurovascular checks - giving an overview of circulation and feeling in your feet.
Assessment of Podiatric need - identifying foot conditions, discussing your concerns and aims, and developing a treatment plan and advice tailored to your needs.
Routine treatment - reduction of nails, corns and callous. Application of moisturiser.
This is mandatory before any other appointment as a thorough examination is vital to ensure patient safety.
ROUTINE TREATMENT £35
Reduction of nails, clearing the edges of nails and removing any ingrown edges or spikes. Ennucleation (removal) of corns and removal of hard skin with skilled bladework.
Application of appropriate moisturiser.
Advice on footcare and footwear to improve foot health.
NAIL SURGERY from £ 200
Surgical removal of all or part of the nail to resolve painful ingrown nails. This procedure is done under local anaesthetic (numbing of the toe) and phenol is used to prevent the problematic nail from regrowing.
DIABETIC ASSESSMENT £70 (includes ROUTINE TREATMENT)
Full assessment including vascular assessment (palpation and doppler audification of pulses, capillary refill, claudication identification, temperature, visual inspection for signs of vascular deficit), and neurological assessment (neurothesiometer, monofilament, neurotip, discussion of signs and symptoms), assessment of feet and footwear and discussion of risk factors for foot complications. Advice on how best to manage feet to keep them as healthy as possible. A risk category will be assigned in line with current NHS guidelines and a copy of results sent on to GP if desired. Current guidance is that this should be carried out annually on diabetic patients.
VASCULAR ASSESSMENT with ABPI £45
Using a Doppler to audify your pulse and a blood pressure cuff to obtain pressures in arms and legs, the Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) can be calculated - this is the recommended test to identify peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Also assessed is capillary refill, claudication identification, temperature and a visual inspection for signs of vascular deficit. Results will be fully recorded, discussed and explained and appropriate advice given. If desired a report will be sent to your GP.
NEUROLOGICAL ASSESSMENT £30 (£20 if added to vascular assessment)
Using a neurothesiometer the vibration sensation can be quantified, this is the earliest indicator of sensory deficit. Monofilaments are used to check light touch sensation and neurotips to check sharp/blunt sensation. Visual inspection and discussion of signs and symptoms will complete the examination. Results will be fully recorded, discussed and explained and appropriate advice given. If desired a report will be sent to your GP.
PLEASE NOTE THAT AT PRESENT THERE IS NO GAIT ANALYSIS OR BIOMECHANICS SERVICE AT CATHERINE BURNSIDE PODIATRY.
